Re: BIAFF 2024 - yes or no?

I must say that I echo and endorse everything that Jill says about BIAFF. I’ve attended every one since 2008 and for me it’s one of the main highlights of the year. There’s a wide variety of films on show, something for everyone, and I don’t personally consider a film as “depressing” if it’s well ma...

Re: Where next for the IAC?

Geof, I’ve booked Travelodge in Broad Street for a total of £117 for the Friday and Saturday nights. It’s the cheapest I could find. But the Premier Inn (Broad Street) wouldn’t have been much more expensive - your quote is wildly inaccurate. Dave, I’ve only had one bad experience and that was Saturd...

Re: BIAFF 2024 - yes or no?

Yes I think this is a VERY good move to encourage more people to attend the weekend event in person. I’ve long suspected that too many were taking the lazy way out and staying at home to watch the event on Zoom, people who would otherwise have attended. Another good thing is that we are assured of a...

Michael, I doubt that I would travel all that way but winning some kind of award would nevertheless please me so I think it’s worthwhile for me to enter.

Thanks for drawing this festival to our attention. I’ve just submitted my latest film called DO IT, HARRY.

Re: What is the difference between an AV and a film?

Dave says “My concern was always that the film told a good story (factual or fictional).” This opens up a whole new topic: Does every film have to tell a story? I remember a Diamond Award winner called “Reflected London” (I think) consisting of images of London reflected in windows, water, mirrors e...

Re: What is the difference between an AV and a film?

Michael, you ask me why I seek rules. The way I see it is this. While there are separate competitions for FILMS and AV SEQUENCES, I think there have to be rules as to how much live action video is permitted in AV. Otherwise an entry into the AV competition might include, what, 70% ? 90% ? live actio...

Re: BIAFF 2024 - yes or no?

Yes Dave you’re right, as long as I’m still alive and kicking, I’ll be there. While there’s a lot to be said for Zoom, it can never be as good as live attendance. One thing that bothers me about the live Zoom streaming of BIAFF is that there are bound to be people who take the ‘lazy’ option of stayi...

Re: BIAFF 2024 - yes or no?

Well said, Martin. Well that makes two of us who believe that live BIAFF is absolutely essential. Without live BIAFF, the IAC would lose most of its reason to exist and I forecast that membership would rapidly dwindle. Keep it going at all costs!

Re: BIAFF 2024 - yes or no?

I would be bitterly disappointed if BIAFF stopped being a live event. Zoom is useful for meetings and non-festival events but you can’t beat watching films on a big screen with a live audience. I very much regret that, post-COVID, events such as the CEMRIAC Spring Movie Festival have stopped being l...

Re: What is the difference between an AV and a film?

As there’s been no response to my last message I’m guessing that there are no set rules as to how much video can be used in an AV sequence. I can’t help but think that such rules SHOULD be laid out so that we know at what point a piece of work should be deemed as a film rather than an AV.

Albert Noble, for the record your clever animation film FOR TWO PINS went down very well with the audience this evening at the Wolverhampton Film Festival! It’s a very good film.

Re: What is the difference between an AV and a film?

I used to think that AV sequences needed to comprise still images only. Now I get confused when AV sequences contain live action video. Clarification would be useful. What percentage of live action video is permitted in an AV?
