Re: BIAFF 2025 - results and more

Many thanks Geoff. Yes I was delighted to receive the ‘Best Comedy’ award. I don’t make many comedies but of course there is no ‘Best Drama’ or ‘Best Thriller’ (or even ‘Best Horror’) award. As an aside, I usually think that the ‘Best Story’ award goes to the wrong film. But we all have our own opin...

Re: BIAFF 2025 - results and more

Geoff, Shhhh was another of your great shorts following on from the likes of Selfie and Smile. The actress was absolutely terrific and should have been nominated for Best Acting. I found the film gripping and really well made (to professional standard). It came across to me as worthy of 5 Stars. Reg...

Re: BIAFF 2025 - results and more

Thanks for mentioning me, Dave. Yes, I’m quite pleased with having five 4* awards and those films had very positive well written appraisals from the judges. Four of them are being screened at the BIAFF weekend. The film DUTY BOUND has a nomination for Best Acting for Amanda Gail Clarke. Unfortunatel...

Re: The weird world of Film Festivals

Geoff, I wish you WOULD name names regarding festivals which reject films without even watching them whilst retaining the entry fee. This is thoroughly reprehensible behaviour from money-grabbing fraudsters, money that I personally can ill-afford to lose.

Re: BIAFF 2024 - yes or no?

I have begun to think recently that it’s too easy for judges to say that a film would be better if it were shorter. A film generally finds its own length and is as long as the filmmaker wants it to be. My film ‘The Truth’ was criticised for a supposed 20 second gap after a phone call before a conver...

Re: BIAFF 2024 - yes or no?

I have difficulty changing the way I think about star ratings. A 5 Star award is what I’m aiming for with each and every film. 5 Stars is an indication of high achievement and for me anything below that feels like an indication that the film could have been better. I’ve had so many 4 Star awards now...

Re: BIAFF 2024 - yes or no?

You outline a neat and straightforward system, Dave. I’d be in favour of this. Let’s face it, each year there seem to be lots of filmmakers who are disappointed with their star ratings. We know that 3 Stars is meant to be an indication of a ‘good’ film but there’s a widespread feeling that 3 Stars i...

Re: BIAFF 2024 - yes or no?

The 3 Star category incorporates a wide variation in quality which is why I mentioned in particular that a documentary about Northern Ireland was a “high end 3”. In fact I even wonder whether a 10 Star system of judging might be a good idea, ie. give films marks out of 10. This would basically mean ...

Re: BIAFF 2024 - yes or no?

I must say that I echo and endorse everything that Jill says about BIAFF. I’ve attended every one since 2008 and for me it’s one of the main highlights of the year. There’s a wide variety of films on show, something for everyone, and I don’t personally consider a film as “depressing” if it’s well ma...

Re: Where next for the IAC?

Geof, I’ve booked Travelodge in Broad Street for a total of £117 for the Friday and Saturday nights. It’s the cheapest I could find. But the Premier Inn (Broad Street) wouldn’t have been much more expensive - your quote is wildly inaccurate. Dave, I’ve only had one bad experience and that was Saturd...

Re: BIAFF 2024 - yes or no?

Yes I think this is a VERY good move to encourage more people to attend the weekend event in person. I’ve long suspected that too many were taking the lazy way out and staying at home to watch the event on Zoom, people who would otherwise have attended. Another good thing is that we are assured of a...

Michael, I doubt that I would travel all that way but winning some kind of award would nevertheless please me so I think it’s worthwhile for me to enter.

Thanks for drawing this festival to our attention. I’ve just submitted my latest film called DO IT, HARRY.
