Re: BIAFF ONLINE ...

I’m hugely disappointed that the traditional BIAFF can’t go ahead this year. It’s been the highlight of my year every year since 2008. I’ll be there for the online event of course but I just desperately hope that it’s just a one-off and that BIAFF 2021 will back to normal. I’m hoping that the Saturd...

Re: Anyone out there?

I've kept quiet about 'Competition Culture' until now but, for what it's worth, despite the inevitable flaws in a competition system, I like competitions. I always have, going right back to the Movie Maker Magazine 'Ten Best' competition which I entered many times during the 1970s and 1980s. Competi...

Re: Anyone out there?

I absolutely agree with Tim that David Newman does a fantastic job of selecting a balanced and entertaining programme for BIAFF each and every time. With regard to the sound for my outdoor cafe scene, the problem is that I don't know what else I could have done with the sound. It had to be redubbed;...

Re: Anyone out there?

In the final analysis, I always hope that my efforts will be appreciated by judges but I realised a long time ago that, despite the judging guidelines, judging isn't an exact science. A film that impresses one particular group of BIAFF judges may well fall flat with another set of judges. It was a g...

Re: FESTIVALS ON FILM FREEWAY

It was a great honour that my film NOBODY ASKED was included in an online festival at 7.00 pm this evening: THUNDR SHORT FILM SHOWCASE It was selected as one of the Top 8 films officially selected from all the films submitted during August. The whole show lasted about 50 minutes. NOBODY ASKED was th...

Re: Anyone out there?

Tim mentions that I have issues with some of the judges’ comments. It’s true, I do, even though I shouldn’t and I try not to. As a regular first round judge I know that the judges do their best to be honest, impartial, fair and objective. But they can’t always get it right. One example of this: My 4...

Re: Anyone out there?

With regard to editing, Michael, I quite agree that editing a documentary must be far more difficult and time-consuming than editing a linear story film. These days I edit very promptly and quickly after each filming session. Let’s take this week for instance. I’ve had two lengthy filming sessions i...

Re: FESTIVALS ON FILM FREEWAY

Michael, I never add the laurels to the film itself but I occasionally create a poster and put the laurels on that. I used to make a poster for every film, with a tag line, but it’s too time-consuming now as I make so many films. And you’re quite right, it DOES seem that lower awards at BIAFF are gi...

FESTIVALS ON FILM FREEWAY

There are hundreds of film festivals worldwide on Film Freeway. Many of them are dubious ways of making money, I suspect. You pay your non-refundable fee, then you're told by email eventually that your film has not been accepted. Something remarkable happened yesterday. Four of my films were accepte...

Re: Anyone out there?

I’ve been using the same two identical camcorders since 2012: CANON LEGRIA HF G10, recording straight onto the built in hard drive. They’re small but they serve me well. I haven’t got the money available to buy new equipment. For editing I’ve always used Pinnacle Studio and have stuck with version 1...

Re: Anyone out there?

Reply to Jameela. When I returned to filmmaking in 2005 after a few years’ break, I made just one film each year up to and including 2011. The first two films weren’t good enough to submit to BIAFF. Then in 2007 I made a 50 minute thriller called CASHFLOW which was awarded 3 stars at BIAFF 2008 but ...

Re: Anyone out there?

To Ken... In recent years I’ve found it easy to make 6 or 7 films a year... and that was when I had a full time job. I can stay up until 2am... 3am even... to complete an editing session. Not having been able to make films during the lockdown months, I’m now actively catching up on lost time, workin...

Re: Anyone out there?

I’m pleased to report that after the frustration of not being able to make films for a few months, I’ve returned to making films with renewed vigour. Two films are already in the can, with 7 more scripts lined up ready to go. Currently unemployed with “retirement” status until I’m forced to find a n...

Re: Anyone out there?

Make that four of us. I did start a new thread this week regarding licences for featuring children in films. I resumed my filmmaking on Sunday this week for the first time since early March. I have 7 scripts ready to film. I intend to make 5 of these films between now and November. I’m still keeping...

Re: LOCAL COUNCIL LICENCES REGARDING CHILDREN IN FILMS

Thanks Jameela. The exemptions on the site you mention appear to apply to live performances rather than films, from what I can see. I’m still unclear about the situation regarding whether I definitely have to have a licence to have children in my films when they are not being paid and when nobody is...
