Re: 4K 3D where tyo from here?
If there is to be a major move by broadcasters to 4K, then I suspect that it will be for production flexibility rather than distribution/transmission. Both terrestial and satellite broadcasting channels are subject to finite bandwidth meaning that you can have either a large number of lower definiti...

Re: 4K 3D where tyo from here?
Tom, if that is correct then it is disturbing, but could those limitations be circumvented by the camera's firmware as is the case with the Panasonic cameras and Lumix lenses assuming the actual resolving power is sufficient?

Re: 4K 3D where tyo from here?
You may well be right, Dave. As far as still photography is concerned, I always advise to shoot wider than the expected final image as this gives both a safety margin for correcting such shortcomings as an off-horizontal horizon to better compose the picture in post, a technique used since the birth...

Re: 4K 3D where tyo from here?
Considering the resolving power of the human eye, it is very unlikely that the viewer will experience any improvement in resolution compered to HD unless the image is seen on a large screen, say 80 inches or greater, at normal viewing distances, say 12 feet, than that which would be perceived on a t...

Re: 1 2 3 4 5 STARS BIAFF 2013
Col, I do not disagree with all your comments and observations regarding the judging, but my intention was to draw attention to the fact that it can be hurtfull to some people if they are 'named and shamed'. Of course, by submitting our films to be judged and viewed at a festival we should be prepar...

Re: 1 2 3 4 5 STARS BIAFF 2013
I tend to agree with Mike's comments in both posts, but I do find the process of 'knocking and naming' any individual film and its award in order to criiticise the IAC policy or judging to be in rather a bad taste. Whatever we as viewers may think of the film, we should not forget that it was a prod...

Re: YOUR BIAFF 2013 RESULTS
Col Lamb - Thanks for your kind comment regarding 'The Turning of the Screw', much appreciated. Overall, I felt the judging was well executed, but of course there are always some disagreements. 'Ein Augenblick in Mir' (In the Nick of Time) was unfortunate not to get a Diamond Award; I believe that i...

Re: YOUR BIAFF 2013 RESULTS
Same Hymn Sheet, different choruses: it seems to me that every year we get the same or similar moans and groans following the adjudication. Its interesting to note that the Southern Photographic Federation marks photos out of 10 points: up to 1.5 for Technical Quality, 3-5 for content and technical ...

Re: YOUR BIAFF 2013 RESULTS
Just got back from a cruise to receive my adjudication for 'The turning of the Screw'. Spot on, just what I would have given it although, of course, one always hopes for something better!
As usual, the forum is singing from the same hymn sheet, but perhaps a slightly different tune!

Re: QUO VADIS? Where are we going?
One very useful advantage of 4K is the ability to re-frame and/or stabilise shots into a 1920x 1080 format timeline without loss of 1920 x 1080 resolution providing tthat he original framing extends beyond that of the desire image!

Hi Jill,
A friend bought the VG20 recently, mainly for still photography and I can confirm that the moire issue remains.

Re: Sony NEX VG20
Hi Jill, One aspect of the Sony that you should investigate is whether it suffers from the very pronounced moire artifacts as did its predecessor. These can be quite ugly and and may be visible on fine detail such as brick walls, hair or netting. Moire patterning will be more obvious at some levels ...

Re: Panasonic TM 900
Tom is quite correct in his advice that additional filters in front of the lens can reduce the image quality. To see an extreem example of what can happen, shoot looking towards a light source with and without a filter and you are likely to see a very marked 'bloom' over the image when using a filte...

Re: Computer Monitor
Generally speaking, computer monitors do not support 50Hz refresh and I think that it is most unlikely that you will have one that does. In my system I am able to display my video side by side on a Dell 2408 60Hz refreshed screen or on a Samsung TV fed via the HDMI input and there is quite a marked ...

Re: Computer Monitor
Hi Jill, Part of the problem may be that you are using a computer monitor with a native frame refresh rate of 60Hz. to display 50Hz. based video. I would suggest that you get a television receiver with a suitable HDMI, Component or Composite video input as this would be able to cope with the 50z ref...
