Re: Jameela Boardman's Article FVM October 2019

Ref: Jameela Boardman’s appeal for change. In many ways I believe She has some very good points to make….personally I look forward to the delivery of the FVM magazine; just as I did, once upon a time, to the publication of the monthly MOVIE MAKER Magazine in the ‘60s. In fact when I was a young Hote...

Re: BIAFF 2019 at Birmingham

I would like to say that the interviews at BIAFF and the inserted clips from the films within some of the interviews was an excellent idea....well done to the teams. **** I too am a little unsure of the Swimming Pool film......perhaps German sense of humour is somewhat out of kilter with our own. Th...

Re: BIAFF 2019 at Birmingham

An Excellent and well reasoned Post Tom! (Tom Hardwick on the difficulties and constraints or 'judging a competition' when compared to watching an entry for 'entertainment purposes'.) And thank-you for picking up on the nuances of my film "Highly Likely" - a Journalist's story which just r...

Re: BIAFF 2019 at Birmingham

I for one was thrilled with the projection in the Sunday Crescent theatre Auditorium.....and more importantly the 'Audio' which gave rise to a truly weighted and cinematic delivery in a totally blacked out environment. It was worth it. ( I have been whining about Audio for a decade - so I can whine ...

Re: BIAFF 2019 at Birmingham

Willy, Thank-you for showing the DRILL .... I did indeed make the film on my own and I am astonished that it plays as well today as it did ten years ago! Since the success of the Drill, I have always tried, in the 'writing' of my mini-epics, to come up with a double ending which defies the expectati...

Re: BIAFF 2019 at Birmingham

The discussion over Judge's Comments are the equivalent of BREXIT negotiations - They will never end......perhaps all films should be given 5 Stars from the start and we could work backwards! I do recall a Judge, in a former year, telling me that he had viewed Entries on a Standard Hotel Bedroom TV....

Re: BIAFF 2019 at Birmingham

Jill, I feel your pain! Perhaps we should have Judges to Judge the Judge's Comments....or, dare I say it: "Indicative Comments"! Jill, You have always graciously accepted Criticism in your quest for self improvement which has resulted in a succession of top rated films....so it is doubly g...

Re: BIAFF 2019 at Birmingham

Yes Jill, we have two of our Club Members who will not enter films into BIAFF because of the Judge's Comments which were perceived to cause them offence! I have often suggested to the Club Members, that they should not take to heart the Judge's Comments but rather try to 'learn from them' and eventu...

Re: BIAFF 2019 at Birmingham

Sometimes, I feel a sense of unease at the reward and high marks which I have achieved both now, and in the past, with my short-form film making. “The Drill, Rock Bottom, Writer’s Block, The Egg, The Steps, The Bear and Highly Likely” all have a running time of less than three minutes. So, What’s go...

Re: BIAFF 2019 at Birmingham

Howard....Your work ethic is astounding and I am truly astonished at your output ! Well done! I managed one three minute film 'Highly Likely' which I filmed 10 months ago. A satire of the "Skripal" affair, a News Item which kept on 'giving' - if not always in a good way! It's well made and...

I have received the adjudication of my short 3 minute satire of the Skripal Affair (Highly Likely):

Re: Are we ready for an "Upright Film Contest"?

Tim,

Yes... You are absolutely right!

A film is a film...if it is good enough it will engage an Audience irrespective of the shape of the format or the pixel count.

Re: Are we ready for an "Upright Film Contest"?

Michael: I thought you said, on March 15th, that only 10 year olds would make a film on an iPhone! Are you regressing? Give me landscape, Cinemascope, or 16.9 mode anyday! "Portrait" ratio will, and does, have great applications to be sure but I doubt if it will catch on for story telling ...
