Re: Pre amp needed to play my LPs

Hi Tom (again!) I would try this from Behringer as an external RIAA converter. The specs say it can do the job you need and the reviews are favourable, and as with all Behringer gear you get a lot of performance or features for your cash. As there are not too many features to had on this kind of con...

Re: Dropping speaker levels to line levels

No problem, Tom - glad to help where I can. Now it looks as if I would only ever need the Amazon spkr>line level box if I wanted remote control of the head unit. Guess I'm sorted. Not quite sure what you mean by this, though. I've checked the schematic again and as I expected the headphone output is...

Re: Dropping speaker levels to line levels

Hi Tom, disconnecting the speakers should be OK and I can't foresee any problems. Most IC amplifier stages have protection circuits built in to safeguard against short circuits or low impedances, and an open-circuit output shouldn't be a problem. However - if you have no intention of using the MD373...

Re: Dropping speaker levels to line levels

Hi Tom, your methodology of connection makes perfect sense, and in reality connecting the Sony MD373 to extra speakers via its own speaker outputs is the only way to achieve the control you are after. My cautions above were intended for certain - possibly higher powered - amplifiers, whose output st...

Re: Dropping speaker levels to line levels

Hi Tom, this can be a bit tricky! I assume you are talking about a 'domestic' stereo Hi-Fi amplifier's speaker outputs as opposed to a mono guitar or bass amp? There are a myriad of converter boxes available on the like of Amazon and eBay which claim to do that. There are a number of issues to watch...

Re: BIAFF 2022

Hi Tim - happy to see you too! I was looking at hotel prices online before Howard sent me the booking form, and the Novotel alone is £243 from booking.com, obviously without any of the extras thrown in  I have managed to book nearby at £142 for the two nights, with breakfast and WiFi included...

Re: BIAFF 2022

Hi Howard - great to hear from you! Yes, I'm still a fully paid-up IAC member, and with no FVM I might take you up on the offer of a copy of the booking form. I'll send my email address :) I was looking at hotel options; the Premier Inn now wants £165 for 2 nights, it seems the Saturday night stay i...

Re: BIAFF 2022

Hi to everyone on the forum! It's been a while. I note from Simon Sumner that we (hopefully) have a physical festival to attend next year :D Does anyone know where there might be a booking form to download as I would really like to attend and don't seem to have seen one yet (in fact I can't remember...

Re: Jameela Boardman's Article FVM October 2019

Hi Tim, yes you're right on a lot of points and I'll admit to being a little out of touch these days with the inner workings. Despite my repeated urgings at Council, most of their officers appear to take little long-term interest in the forum. You are of course absolutely right that the IAC needs to...

Re: Jameela Boardman's Article FVM October 2019

Publicity is absolutely the key! It makes a product/service seem more successful, and success breeds success. The problem with the IAC, one that I brought up at an AGM a number of years ago, is that before deciding what to throw resources (people, cash, etc) at, the IAC must surely decide what it is...

Re: Jameela Boardman's Article FVM October 2019

I too was slightly perplexed by Jameela's article, and below are my thoughts: 1. I don't recall whether any guidelines regarding member's conduct were issued in my member's welcome pack, but I also don't recall anything similar being issued or told to me when I started any job or joined any other gr...

Re: Exterior Filming in the 'North' this Summer

Hi Jameela. To attract the 'new' generation requires the use of the tools used by them, such as social media and in particular Facebook. The CEMRIAC Region has a fairly active page updated by the awesome Simon Sumner and often promotes the competitions and events of the region, as well as other item...

Re: Hard disk drive failure

Also, it's not a good idea to keep both copies in the same room (or even building) in case of catastrophe (fire, glacier, alien invasion). I will add to that a nugget of information I gleaned many years ago from a computer expert - when using two backup drives DO NOT purchase identical make and mod...

Re: Hard disk drive failure

Windoze 10 does seem to be a nightmare for drives, mine seems to run constantly doing one thing or another, in sharp contrast to my W7 machine. And I'm glad Stephen mentioned about SSD drives - I have heard the same; something to do with adjacent memory bits failing upon repeated rewrites, so I'm st...
