Re: THE MOVIE MAKER TEN BEST COMPETITION

Well Howard, I'm in the same boat as you. I had every copy of Movie Maker since it morphed from another title (Cine something?) but had to get rid of them in a clear out ordained by 'her who must be obeyed'. I do have the issues which contained details of my own successes and articles and reviews th...

Re: BIAFF 2021 RESULTS

Now now boys, I don't want to appear a moaner, I never query judges and certainly not in public, but I have to say I was puzzled. I'm quite proud though to now have a 'full house', One Star all the way up to Diamond, a record I would venture to suggest.

Re: BIAFF 2021 RESULTS

No Howard, you are not correct there. I have just seen that the Oslo Festival, for one, are offering critiques and there are often others doing the same. Mind you, they make an additional charge for doing so! As to Willy's note that he had shown his film to a number of people and from what they said...

Re: How do you learn to make better films?

I have long thought that Dave and Jan Watterson are the best judges within the IAC and it is precisely because of Dave's comment above, that it is the audiences reaction and enjoyment of a film that is one of the most important aspects. Technical faults are only relevant if they effect that experien...

Re: The Interviews - discuss

I agree, great fun and very nicely done. I've seen it before, Ned must have sent it to me sometime. I've heard similar conversations in the real world, everyone sees things from a different perspective. Ned's hair is great but maybe he should have had a wig for a couple of the characters, but that m...

Re: How do you learn to make better films?

What you are saying is interesting but not, I'm afraid, new. Judges are looking at films from the point of view as film makers. I find that the best judges of films, by and large, are people who enjoy films, who read, who go to the theatre, but they are not film makers. There are exceptions of cours...

Ken, I wonder what the score would be? How quickly could the Brazil team get the ball in the net after each kick off?

Re: Sad news: RIP JOHN ASTIN

Only just logged on after a gap and so shocked to read about John Astin. I've known him for years as his club activities were close to our area and I saw him quite often, also of course at BIAFF every year. His films carried a characteristic hallmark, notably his voice! The minute the film started y...

Re: What constitutes an amateur film?

I don't agree that the size of the budget necessarily has anything to do with the quality of the film. Personally, I have hardly spent a penny on films that I have made over the last forty or fifty years, apart from film (long ago) and equipment of a standard that most serious amateurs use. I always...

Howard, I've got two in to keep you company, although they won't challenge you for honours I'm sure, I'm getting past it I'm afraid.

As he's entered one so will I - with little hope of success I might add, old age is catching up with me fast!

Ken, I much enjoy reading your material, well, we have to put up with your face as well now, never mind. I'm decades older than you, my turn may have long passed!

Willy, you could have left your computer post in Dutch, we all can understand that you know because we are not out of Europe for another day!
Happy New Year to you dear boy, may you and your film making flourish.
