Re: Lip Synch

It is always interesting to us old people when earlier problems with film making are discussed. I started with Standard 8mm film in the 1960s and for sure found audio sync almost impossible. I was fortunate to have an early film screened at the National Film Theatre but that was 'blown up" to 1...

Re: BIAFF 2024 - yes or no?

I have carefully kept away from all the criticism of judges as it mostly comes from disappointed film makers. Willy, I am very surprised that you are so upset that you decide not to go to BIAFF. We have all been surprised, and yes, disappointed by judgements of our films but you surely understand th...

Re: Where next for the IAC?

I don't think that the problem is solely related to costs. The problem is that clubs and formal establishments seem to be going out of fashion. People prefer to associate with their friends on an informal basis rather than join a club. Film makers are forming small groups and meeting in pubs. I don'...

Ned, wow, 55'' screen etc etc, I have trouble in persuading my wife to have a 40'' screen exposed when not in use!

Tom, why do you think that is? No time, no computer, not knowing it exists, not interested?

Re: 16mm and 9.5mm Transfers

No Jill, I haven't used Stanleys for quite a while but I do pop in there from time to time for various small things. They do all kinds of transfers period. They will be as good as anyone, using all the latest gear, obviously price will be a factor so you might want to get some quotes.

Re: 16mm and 9.5mm Transfers

Jill, our own Tom Hardwick has quite a business going with Transfers. Certainly his 8mm ones could hardly be bettered but I'm not sure about 16mm. Years ago I had many of my earlier 16mm films digitised but that was twenty five years ago. Stanleys, down in Soho do a pretty good job and I could put y...

Re: 14th Edinburgh Short Film Festival Open For Entries - International Showcases & Awards

Yes Howard, sounds a good Festival but do you really want to go all the way up to Edinburgh if they do screen your film? I now only enter when the event is not just on line and where I can easily attend if by chance my film is selected to be screened, sadly very rare for me nowadays.

Re: Competition sections

Well Albert, you and I go back quite a few years, back to the good old Ten Best times. I'm a year short of my 90 and I'm making fewer films now, it all seems such an effort and the imaginative juices are drying up. Having said that I am just embarking on a project that I hope will be interesting. Ho...

Re: U-matic tape player

Billy, your best bet might be anyone at the BBC because they had this machine as a basic tool. Do you know any editors or production people there? Failing that Stanleys in Percy Street (?) would do it for you but at a charge!

Re: Hybrid camera, Piccolo and Colour Grading

My old friend and rival Willy! First of all Willy, you are not old, I am twelve years older than you and am only just starting to wonder whether my film making days may be coming to an end. That being said I insist that you do not have to keep up with all the wonderful technical developments to make...

Re: Open Film Night Summer Chalenge

As I was the nominated 'judge' for this on line event I feel entitled to comment. I tend to agree with Dave in that the point about film making is to express yourself and to create a piece after considerable thought and preparation. I was full of admiration that the people who made films for this ev...

Re: What is the difference between an AV and a film?

Dave, Potter's Lunch does actually tell a story of these artists, whereas, as Howard points out, I don't really tell stories with my 'cut to music' shorts such as Ski Break, or my recent Zebra. All this goes to show how impossible it is to define the purpose of any art. Art can do anything for the v...
