Re: Future of radio mics
Thanks for finding this Ned, it is a must view for all radio mic users. I thought that the interviewer was tending to be a bit alarmist and it does seem as though we have a few years before having seriously to consider new digital radio mics. The warning about frequencies is valid though. I have com...

Re: COPYING ONES OWN DVDS'S
I use Titanium Toast for all my DVD burning both original .img files and copying an existing disc. It is, I am told, the most reliable software around for burning. Their latest version, 10, burns Blu-Ray as well as SD but of course you need a BD burner etc etc.

Re: Sony's camcorder changes
Tom, you seem to have revived a thread long dead! I've read the review of the EX1 R and indeed have met the reviewer, Alister Chapman. He fronted a Sony day at the suppliers I use Top-Teks out at Harefield. I've been filming on my EX1 for nearly two years now and I have got on with it very well but ...

Re: Copying commercial VHS tapes to PC
I find that the best quality is obtained by transferring the VHS tapes to Mini DV with a decent DV deck. Then I ingest the material into my edit system, put it on a timeline, maybe add a few titles or tidy things up a bit and export in my usual way and make a DVD using BitVice and DVD Studio Pro. Th...

Re: CH - CH -CH - CHANGES
Of course there has to be one awkward old b....r who disagrees with the majority! Of course appreciation for all the hard work that Dave and Jan do but personally I prefer just the one forum which covers many topics. You can easily scan down the posts for ones that may interest you (providing that t...

Re: HD at BIAFF 2010
I have been shooting my footage in full 1920 X 1080 HD for years now but haven't made a fuss about them being shown in HD for the simple reason that even when downscaled either by my edit system (Media 100) or by the DVD encoder (BitVice) the resulting pictures were much better than they had been wh...

Re: FVM latest Issue - amateur
Wow, this really is the nitty gritty on 'Amateur' film making and I agree with every word - because there hasn't been a dissenting voice! I have to confess that when discussing film making with people involved in the professional world I fight shy of 'amateur' and use the term suggested by Ned - tha...

Re: STILLS
I agree with those that say good films can be made with stills but they have to be very carefully done to avoid the sometimes boring effect of some AV shows. I recently made a film about a group of fellows who trekked in remote places throughout the world for twenty years. I only had thousands of 35...

Re: UK Copyright Law
Billy, that looks very comforting but I don't think it's correct. I'm sure that the very act of copying a recorded piece of music infringes copyright unless the music is by a composer whose work is out of copyright and played by an ensemble in your control. The recording is owned by the record compa...

Re: Should BIAFF change?
As one who remembers LIAFF's (London Amateur Film Festivals) from the St Ermins (Westminster) days in the early 70's I feel well qualified in joining Dave in trying to suggest changes. Speaking personally I never go on any of the local trips but it may well be that those not so keen on watching film...

Re: What baffled you when you began filming?
Good question Dave but impossible to answer! Everyone is different, everyone is looking for a different result. When I started I was already interested in photography so understood all the implications of exposure, shutter speeds and how they affect depth of field etc. I just thought that moving pic...

Re: Hood-Pro for cameras
I was interested to read this thread because I have been shooting with the Sony EX1 for a year now and am getting ever more frustrated with the difficulty in focusing in daylight on the screen. I have a small hood which helps, I also have the hood with the magnification glass on the end that Tom wri...

Re: How many people?
What a ridiculous idea! In my (experienced) view the number of names on the credits makes no difference whatsoever to a film's quality. Possibly with a drama more people would be needed but even that's not necessarily so. I would even go so far as to say (especially with non commercial films) that t...

Re: New Project
I have been very irregular in checking the forum recently but don't want to let this thread go without partaking. As some of you know I have been pre occupied by a project that I was lured into, a documentary on 'The Making of' a feature film. The editor is an old friend of mine and he knows a lot o...

Re: Festivals
I always seem to come in at the tail of these interesting threads, trouble is I'm so busy editing I don't go to my second computer for E Mail! I totally agree with Ned about some of the international festivals and the Americans are the worst. Moondance for instance collects a large sum of money, doe...
