free stock footage

Post by tom hardwick »

I've just come across a company called Artbeats is offering one free stock footage clip from its library every day on a promotional basis. The clips can be incorporated into anything, from home movie to ad to feature film, royalty free, as long as they aren't resold or given away as stock footage.

They're offered in 1080 HD, NTSC, and PAL resolution. Running time per clip is 20 seconds or less. I don't see anything that specifies a frame rate or whether they're progressive or interlaced. (I suspect it may vary from clip to clip.) The clip I just looked at is 30p in M-JPEG format, for whatever that's worth.

Might be just what you need to fill in the gaps of your next production.

Just registered and downloaded one - its in MOV format, but should still work fine on my gear here. This is similar to the http://www.footagefirm.com (click on their 'Free Footage tab) - they regularly offer a stack of footage dvd's 'free' ... you pay for postage (about £8 a time). But you have to pay the postage on each one you order - still good value, and you get to pick the DVDs you want, each of which has about 20 - 40 clips on the subject or theme that you've chosen. There's an excellent variety - I have about 8 of them now ... and one day, may even use one of the clips!!! (Just kidding - they are very useful really).

While you are investigating, check out http://stockfootageforfree.com which is pretty good with free footage you can download and https://www.pond5.com which has "free but for the postage" offers regularly.

I have just downloaded a free clip from Artbeats but it doesn't seem to work with Adobepremiere 6.5. The clip shows and plays in the source monitor okay but when I drag it to the Timeline a message says it needs rendering and in fact the rendering line shows red. When I click onto render workarea. A message tells me it can't render it( or words to that effect), although the render line turns green as if it has been rendered. However it doesn't play in the programme monitor. When I select preview from the rendering options it will play. I tried converting the clip to AVI and still no joy. Any Ideas anyone.
