I think we have reached a sensible end to this aspect of the thread now. My thanks to both CforT and BlueAV for interesting points on film preservation and introducing me to "vinegaring" - a subject I knew nothing about before.
We drifted along a side road from the main topic a little bit, but it was interesting to hear about film preservation - a topic not much discussed in amateur movie circles these days.
So far as video archiving goes the practical advice seems to be for the moment to copy to tape for long term storage. If you copy to DVD, re-copy every other year ... or when a new storage medium comes along - whichever is the sooner. The aim is to preserve the digital data and have it on media for which we have players. File format changes can usually be handled by software but if the hardware to play it is not available ... the data is useless.
