The Big Gig 2011- THORSAA FILM FESTIVAL

Post by FILM THURSO »

The Big Gig has run it's course and is now changing it's appearance. The Big Gig will move over to present the Thorsaa Film Festival.
The new festival name reflects the Pictish Viking culture and heritage of Caithness, a non-galic part of Scotland. We continue to look for the same wide range of film content from around the world but will also be developing stronger European content with a particular focus on the Nordic countries.
The website also remains as http://www.thebiggig.eu but you will immediately notice the new banners. There have been some alterations to the rules and information. We look forward to your continued and hopefully increasing support (because it hasn't been too good so far). Get those films to us by 21st July 2011. The Thorsaa Film Festival takes place on Saturday 24th SEPTEMBER.

Thorsaa is the version of the Viking name of current day Thurso and it dates from around 1152. Previously it was Thor's A' and the town is directly named after the Norse god Thor in the same as Thursday also originates. There is only one other town called Thurso and you will find it in Quebec, Canada. It took it's name from Thurso, Scotland. There is a Norwegian boat of the same name and it also has an early version of Caithness in it's name- "Thurso -Katiness". There are streets and house all over the world named after Thurso and the town is internationally famous in the amateur and professional surfing circuits.
Thurso and Caithness was a Pictish area who inheritted the land from more ancient late post deluvian peoples, the Brochans who spread out from hear to most of Scotland and whose presence is recognised by the Broch towers.

Really not sure yet. We launched the Picture House community cinema in July to provide mainstream cinema until (fingures crossed) we can get our local cinema re-opened. It was a viable business run into the ground by incompetant owners and staff who managed to get on the wrong side of everybody who came in the doors. Between running films and working to save the cinema, our time has been soaked up so it was not practical to put the team on for 2 full weekends of films. This coming Saturday we are showing Deathly Hallows Part 2 and the team are in from 11am to 11pm with very little beak time. The up side is that Skinandi's Nightclub where we are showing films, is the old Picture House built in 1922 as a cinema theatre so we made a bit of history bring films back there after 28 years absence. :D

We are also looking to change venue to Skinandi's because it offers the option for faster and more efficiant set-up, in-house PA plus sweets, refreshments and lots of booze (if you want it) and we can fit it into their normal working pattern. As far as I can see the festival won't happen this year alas but it's still going to run, we have a full schedule of films that haven't been shown yet.
