Re: New Project

I have been very irregular in checking the forum recently but don't want to let this thread go without partaking. As some of you know I have been pre occupied by a project that I was lured into, a documentary on 'The Making of' a feature film. The editor is an old friend of mine and he knows a lot o...

Re: Festivals

I always seem to come in at the tail of these interesting threads, trouble is I'm so busy editing I don't go to my second computer for E Mail! I totally agree with Ned about some of the international festivals and the Americans are the worst. Moondance for instance collects a large sum of money, doe...

Re: 16:9 or not?

Just a point I forgot to mention which Billy referred to. If you have letterboxed a production there is no need to put anything on the box concerning aspect as a projectionist today would assume it to be 4:3 and project it as such which would be correct. The confusion arises when people label a lett...

Re: 16:9 or not?

I can't believe that this conversation is even taking place particularly amongst intelligent film makers. I do know of course that Dave likes to stir things up a bit to provoke discussion but 4:3 or 16:9, really! Willy is right, optical experts do say that our eyes adapt better to that format and qu...

Re: You can 'see' the burnt part of a DVD

Tom, it could be that 'Nero' has cleverly compared the data to be transferred with the capacity of the disc and used a bit rate that fills the disc thereby maximising the quality? Nice thought but probably unlikely! By the way, you always maintain that transferring digital video never loses quality ...

Re: Apologies for Missing BIAFF

Thanks fellows, sorry again to have missed you. I am glad my room went to a deserving soul (Betty J was good enough to refund me!). I will make every effort to be in Harrogate. Willy, I think I've seen your film, can't think where, let's both resolve to be in the Awards Show next year!!!

Apologies for Missing BIAFF

Having promised to meet, talk and drink with many of my fellow film makers I wish publicly to apologise but I have been unavoidably detained in London. As I explained to Dave, I was asked to make the 'Making Of' film of a feature being shot in my local area of North London which was an offer I could...

Re: Should competitions only accept new movies?

Oh David, technically better today? Maybe in picture quality but, as Gershwin wrote, "it ain't necessarily so". I'm not at all sure that we are making a great deal of progress artistically speaking although there are notable exceptions of course. Your main question as to the acceptance of ...

Re: Should we ape TV or create our own styles?

As always, Dave has touched on the very crux of non commercial film making. Of course we all have our own styles and it is, as Willy so clearly states, difficult to change even if we wanted to. Only the real genius does that, in the case of Picasso, many times! Amateurs do try and ape TV productions...

Re: Bernhard Hausberger

Thank you David for transmitting this sad news. What a man Bernhard was, and what courage he showed. It is amazing how terribly quickly disaster can strike as he seemed to be quite OK only a year ago at BIAFF 08.

Re: Moive Maker 10 Best Films

I won six Ten Bests in the 70's and 80's (old men are allowed to boast!) and I have 16mm film prints of them all and DVCAM tape copies of most. If you want any you are welcome. I think that there are a number also in the IAC library.

Re: But is it art?

Odd question that Dave but then you only wanted to get people going, especially the old ones like me! As video goes yes, I suppose it is art, and it's quite amusing but not really satisfying as a piece of work in my view. It works better as it gets more surreal but the connection with the Mona Lisa ...

Re: Good quality machines, bad quality films

It goes without saying that equipment does'nt make a film, as Willy and others acknowledge, it is the film maker alone who does that. There are situations sometimes, (eg unavoidably low light or difficult sound conditions) which certain types of kit can help in overcoming, but by and large the final...

Re: Tape is fading away

Tom is probably right (isn't he always, well nearly always!) but it certainly shouldn't stop any on from buying a tape camera. I have recently gone over to a tapeless workflow and it hasn't been trouble free. I now shoot in full 1920 X 1080i codec and since I have a big Mac G5 and TB's of external s...

Re: PROJECTORS

I have just presented an evening at Finchley Film Makers in North London and I have never had my stuff shown through such fantastic kit. I know they went to a great deal of trouble to get it right and the research was thorough. They first of all up scale both DVD's and Mini DV tape and then put it t...
