Re: FILM SOUND

With the proviso that you are copying from like to like formats, digital copying does not degrade the original. On the other hand, if you are copying from an uncompressed 16bit CD to a highly compressed MP3 format, then it is almost certain that there will be some change to the original. Multiple pl...

Re: Projector Screens (again!)

Ref my earlier post. I should have said that NICAM was an early form of digital transmission, but unlike CDs it was, if I remember correctly, 14 bit pulse code modulated using level compression at the source and expansion at the receiver; it must have been a 'senior moment' in my response that I sai...

Re: Projector Screens (again!)

As a professional classical music sound recording engineer I have to agree with Tom regarding the quality of digital v analogue and stereo v mono. The frequency spectrum recorded on analogue LPs is no wider than that of CDs, indeed in most cases it is less and its extreme LF and HF response is certa...

Re: Printing onto BD discs

Michael, These days I use the Matrox MX02 mini with Max if I'm editing from FCP or Firecoder Blue if I'm on the Edius system. Prior to that I used Toast 10 Platinum on the FCP system. Firecoder Blue is a stand alone hardware solution that goes into a PCIex slot and operates under Windows; you don't ...

Re: COPYING ONES OWN DVDS'S

For durations of up to about 40 minutes you can burn a Bluray compatible disk on to a standard DVD using H264 coding . Simply create a Bluray Image file and then copy this to the DVD. It works well and it is much less expensive than burning onto a Bluray disk - it also avoids the need to pay for exp...

Re: Sony's camcorder changes

Yes I did read it. Although I haven't had any experience with the Z7 I do agree with your comments in general - It's the human optics behind the camera that make a good picture!

Re: Sony's camcorder changes

The FX1/Z1 are a fine cameras and in no way should they be considered 'old hat', but I do find the tapeless work flow much more to my liking. Having said that, there are some qualities of the Z1 image that I quite prefer; for example, perhaps it is the slightly softer image that is less unkind to CU...

Re: Sony's camcorder changes

Hi Tom,

The Z1 and the EX1 - still have the Z1, and wished that the original EX1 had the same 'feel' to the balance of the Z1. This has now been addressed.

Re: Sony's camcorder changes

Have now had chance to play a little with my new EX1r and I'm very pleased with the mods that Sony have made. Surprisingly, one of the least mentioned mods is to my mind one of the best; the camera is now balanced and when hand held you don't have to struggle to keep uprights upright. The EVF is a v...

Re: Premiere 6.5 editing

Although I haven't used this approach with P6.5 I have used it to provide back up copies of all my professional audio editing which if lost could be very expensive. For each project I create a new folder on my editing drive (say drive letter E). During and after editing I'll copy all the original au...

Re: Magix movie editor

I was asked to evaluate the previous version of this program and found it to be exceptional value for money, a trend continued in this latest release. What particularly impressed me was the way the program allowed for different editing experiences ranginging from the simple storyboard to full edit t...

Re: A New AppleMac or a PC?

I think that I would be happier to retain Edius as it is now rather than have to rely soley on FCP in its present form. Fortunately software does not deteriorate with age, as do tape heads, so even if Edius was to be discontinued then I would still have an efficient editing program! As at present, I...

Re: A New AppleMac or a PC?

My first post on this forum and it's probably a contentious one so it could be my last! Although it is not my intention to do so, I'm sure that I will upset many Final Cut Pro users in stating that, in my opinion, FCP has long passed it's 'sell by' date'; this also applies to the latest incar...
