Unfortunately I could not watch the films ... but my concern is that such contests are about the mechanics of getting a film made with content and any artistry coming second.

Re: What is the difference between an AV and a film?
Ah ... my mistake. When I say something like that at a club, I go on to explain that I believe every film should take the audience on a journey. Most journey-films are stories some are documentaries but as Howard points out there are occasional films which are more about opening our minds. A Reflect...

Re: What is the difference between an AV and a film?
This is a little off-topic, but ...
The discussion reminds me of the arguments about what percentage of archive or non-original film could be in a festival entry.
I never gave a damn. My concern was always that the film told a good story (factual or fictional).

Re: BIAFF 2024 - yes or no?
Great! So will Jan and I. I am sure Howard, Ken and Carol will be there. Michael Slowe usually puts in an appearance. Willy and Vera may make it, though travelling is harder for him these days. We know Simon Sumner and Mike Whyman will be doing there best to get more bums on seats ... and Martin Eva...

BIAFF 2024 - yes or no?
It feels sacrilegious to say it, but have we come to the end of "live" BIAFFS? Jan and I really enjoyed the 2023 event ... we stayed in Birmingham and had a very good time. But there were so few of us in the cinemas. Yes, there were 50 or so attendees on Zoom, which helped. (Online partici...

We seem to be shrinking!
Almost every week I hear of a club, which is going under. They may be abandoning some or all live meetings for Zoom. They may be declaring themselves over - and finding some suitable cause to which they can donate any remaining money. WHY? Is it a lingering effect of the Covid lockdowns? As we all g...

Re: Judging-FVM June
The first part of judging sorts out films into 1-star, 2-star, 3-star, 4-star, 5-star and Diamond categories. The final judges then have to sort out the prizes - which often means getting advice from other judging teams if the best animation happens to be 5-star or best club film a 4-star ... those ...

Re: Judging-FVM June
To judge by his letter in FVM how much of James Chalmer's ire is caused by the writing skills of the judges rather than the score he got?
Are we asking too much of judges to assess and also to write well?

Re: Judging-FVM June
One of the hardest things for any film maker to accept is that there is not necessarily a correlation between how hard they worked to make it and how well the film succeeds. Something of that sort is behind the "kill your darlings" advice so often give. Long ago, Ken Wilson taught me, that...

Re: BIAFF RESULTS 2023
I am very happy to see Albert back on the forum ... these 90-year-old youngsters have a lot to say. Ned, thanks for the thanks. I will make sure the word gets back to the people mainly responsible: Jill Bunting and John Smith (on main controls), Martin Evans (on click control in the cinema), Ian Ben...
