How do I make a film ? And You ?

Some weeks ago Dave Watterson wrote : "What surprised me on first contact with the movement is how little time most clubs spend making movies or eventually talking seriously about how movies are made. So much attention seemed to be paid to technicalities. The rattling sound of old projectors. ...

Re: Minimum Festival Rules

If we were to try to formulate one common core group of rules, what would they be? To kick off I suggest: 1. Who can enter (pro, amateur, student, age group, nationality etc.) 2. Maximum (and if necessary minimum) lengths of entries.... Any other essential rules? How about leader lengths? Style of ...

[quote="Michael Slowe Technical problems do have to be understood by us of course but it is the artistic aspect that is the crux.[/quote] Balance and harmony I agree with you, Michael. So what is art in film ? I will try to give my feelings : I think excellent photography is essential. A good e...

Re: Future BIAFFs - what (if anything) needs change?

What more ? Dave I've forgotten to tell you this : three Saturday cinemas instead of four. It also means less films, but now there were still some filmmakers with two films being screened and many filmmakers were absent. They were not there to receive their bronze, silver or even gold ! That's a pi...

Re: Future BIAFFs - what (if anything) needs change?

People have been very complimentary about BIAFF 2007 and have rightly noted various things which worked well. Now let us turn our thoughts to the future. Dave Firework Display ! I think that the Gala Show must be on Sunday. A grand finale with a magnificent firework display at the end of the festiv...

Re: Favorite films & why?

The most surprising aspect of amateur film making is the very low level of experimentation. Most amateur films look like B versions of what we see on TV. The feature films I revisit are those that play with my mind and demand a high level of attention and can subsequently be analysed for hours. her...

In Belgian festivals also mini-DV-tapes are used because of the many problems with DVD's. Last year a film made by one of the young members of my club was selected for the National Competition. He didn't want to attend the festival as he hates these competitions. He gave me his film on DVD ! He refu...

This is a good example of the sheer importance of CONTENT over all else. "Low Handrail" is one of my one minute movies. Two men are having a beer in a pub. They are tipsy. They leave the pub when it's already dark. The pub is near the railway line. They cannot find their way back home and ...

The Queen in my film !

Some time ago I received archive films from the curator of the Passchendaele Museum in Belgium. They are very useful for my film about the First World War in Flanders. The Battle of Passchendaele took place in 1917. More than half a million of soldiers were killed, wounded or missed. In one month ti...
